Education.& Therapy Vol.23.(3.) (pp.232.-236.), 1998.
Abstract: Throughout life men depend on sex hormones for normal sexual function and the
maintenance of other important systems such as muscle mass and bone density. Most men are
quite aware that male sex hormones - androgens - are important for normal male sexual
function. Actually, the role of androgens in sexual function has at times been overstated,
such as when supplemental testosterone has been used indiscriminately as a treatment for
erectile dysfunction. Androgens have important roles in aging, control of muscle mass, the
regulation of bone density, and in other areas that are only just beginning to receive
wider recognition. The fact that men go through age- related hormonal changes is also
receiving increasing attention. Whether this is called andropause or androgen decline in
the aging male (ADAM) is another issue. This article examines testosterone as a vital
component of normal sexual function, reviews other systemic effects, discusses what is
known about andropause, surveys testosterone replacements, and looks at the future of
hormone studies. [References: 28
